Ohio Wesleyan University offers Merit Scholarships to Native Americans and International students

Established in the year 1842, the Ohio Wesleyan University has grown and developed into one of the high ranked universities in United States of America. It is a private liberal arts university in Delaware, Ohio. ] Ohio Wesleyan has always admitted students irrespective of religion or race; thus, as an international student, you can take the advantage of this opportunity to further your studies, and more than 99% of Ohio Wesleyan students receive scholarships or need-based financial aid. Ohio Wesleyan offers generous merit scholarships that recognize student academic achievement and start at $20,000. All applicants are considered for merit scholarships. Students will be informed of their award when they receive their admission decision or shortly afterwards.  Academic achievement in high school is the primary consideration for this award.


Merit Scholarships Criteria

English Language Proficiency:  International students are required to verify their English proficiency. The following are the English Proficiency options;

  1. TOEFL Paper-based exam: A score of 550 or higher.
  2. TOEFL Internet Based exam (iBT):  A score of 79 or higher.
  3. SAT: A score of 550 or higher on the evidence-based reading and writing section of the SAT I.
  4. IELTS: A score of 6.5 or higher. You can email the Test Report Form Number at the bottom of the form instead of sending an official report directly from IELTS.
  5. Duolingo English Test: A score of 100 or higher.  The Duolingo English Test is an online English proficiency test that can be taken online, on-demand, in under an hour for only US$49. The test is taken via a computer with a camera and includes a proficiency score, video interview, and writing sample which are shared with Ohio Wesleyan when you send your results. Certified results are available within 48 hours of the test session
  6. iTEP: 3.7 or higher
  7. PTE Academic: 53 or higher
  8. Michigan Test – MET: 61 or higher, MELAB 91 or higher
  9. English speaking country
    You are originally from an English speaking country listed below and the primary language of instruction is English.
  10. English as a second Language
    English is your second language but you have attended a secondary school in an English speaking country listed below for at least four years.
  11. IB Programs/O or A Levels/Other External Exams
    Applicants who have completed or are pursuing a full IB diploma in English or have received at least a 5 in the English exam can receive the English proficiency waiver.  Also, for applicants who have taken or are studying for O or A Level exams, we will also waive the English proficiency requirement.  We will review other External Exam results (such as the SSC or HSC) on a case by case basis.



Here are other scholarships the University awards to students;

  1. Ohio Wesleyan International Baccalaureate Scholarship is awarded to international students who have shown a strong performance in the IB curriculum. Preference will be given to full diploma students, but those with IB certificates only will also be considered. Our suggested minimum in the IB is 30 points.
  2. Ohio Wesleyan Cambridge A Levels Scholarship is awarded to international students who have shown a strong performance in the Cambridge A Levels curriculum. Preference will be given to students taking the full A Levels program with exams, but those with Cambridge A Levels individual courses only will also be considered. Our suggested minimum in the A Levels are marks of C and B.
  3. Ohio Wesleyan International Methodist Scholarship is awarded to admitted international students who either come from a Methodist background or who have attended a Methodist secondary school or college prior to coming to OWU.
  4. Ohio Wesleyan Bashford International Scholarship serves as a general international scholarship to admitted international students who don’t qualify for our other three more specific international scholarships listed above.
  5. Rutherford B. Hayes Scholarship for citizens of Paraguay.  Ohio Wesleyan University will award one full tuition scholarship and up to five $40,000 scholarships to five admitted Paraguayan students who meet at least a B average (3.0/5.0 Paraguay curriculum or 3.0/4.0 US curriculum).  Students must also meet the minimum TOEFL requirement of 79 (6.5 for IELTS).



Application Steps

  1. Submit the Common Application or the OWU Online Application.  There is NO application fee.
  2. One Essay should be submitted with the Common Application or our OWU Online Application.. You can choose the topic.
  3. English Language Proficiency:  We require all international students verify their English proficiency.  Please see the various English Proficiency options.  The University reserves the right to require additional English language instruction, if needed, upon arrival.
  4. SAT Scores/ACT Scores are OPTIONAL for all students.  You will not be placed at a disadvantage if you are unable to submit standardized testing.  If you do wish to submit your testing, we would be pleased to consider your scores (SAT code 1594, ACT code 3316).  You may self-report scores but we will require official ones at the enrollment stage.  SAT/ACT scores are NOT required for Transfer Students.
  5. Academic Records can be submitted through the Common Application website by the school or by email if sent directly from the school under their official email address. The official records should include each subject you study and the academic grade/mark or other evidence that you completed the course satisfactorily. Your record should contain an explanation of the grading system. They should be submitted in English or in the original language accompanied by a certified literal translation.
  6. One letter of recommendation is needed from a teacher, coach, or principal who is familiar with your recent academic performance. Submit via the Common Application website  Alternatively, you may send by email to owuintl@owu.edu.
  7. Certification of Finances OR the International Student Financial Aid Application is required (see below).
  8. Interviews:  although interviews are not required for students, we welcome the opportunity to get to know you better through a personal interview – a conversation with a counselor.  OWU offers several options for interviews
