International Scholarship awards at the Technical University of Munich, Germany 2020

Technical University of Munich is a research university in Germany with campuses in Munich, Garching and Freising-Weihenstephan. In the 2018 Global University Employability Ranking of the Times Higher Education World Rankings Technical University of Munich was ranked 8th in the world and 2nd in Europe.Technical University of Munich awards scholarships for international students funded through budget resources from the Bavarian government. The scholarships are meant for BSc and MSc programs




The target group are regular international students at TUM:

  1. who are not eligible for BAföG due to their nationality (see §8 BAföG)
  2. as of 3rd semester in their bachelor‘s studies
  3. as of 2nd semester in their master’s studies (or as of 1st semester in their master’s studies,
    if the bachelor degree has been completed at TUM)
  4. submission of the bachelor’s thesis or master’s thesis not before 30 June (summer term)
    and 31 December (winter term)

During the leave of absence the scholarship won´t be paid.

  1. Merit: good academic records
  2. Proven need:
    There is no need, if the applicant has more monthly income at his/her disposal than the necessity for students according to §13 i.V.m §13a BAföG as last amended.
  3. low parents’ income



Required documents for the application

Please prepare the following documents for upload (pdf files):

  1. Motivational letter
    Please explain your financial status (100-200 words in English or German)
  2. CV/resume
  3. TUM grade report (can be downloaded from TUMonline)
  4. two recommendations
    • not older than one semester (Recommendations issued in the previous semester are valid for this application)
  5. Proof of applicant’s income
    • bank statements of the last three months of all German bank accounts
      (winter term: 01 July – 30 September and summer term: 01 January – 31 March)
      If there are incoming payments, please explain directly on the bank account statement what kind of payment it is
      (for example: salary, parents support, scholarship, loan…)
    • and further documents if applicable (work contract, internship contract, scholarship notification, loan contract, BAföG notification, etc.)
  6. Proof of parents‘ income or proof of income of spouse if applicable
    • if not in German or English language, a certified German translation is required by a sworn translator (with official seal!)
    • not older than one year
